Eleven months after defending his undisputed cruiserweight championship by knocking out Tony Bellew, Oleksandr Usyk finaly will make his first step into the boxing ring as a heavyweight when he faces late replacement Chazz Witherspoon in a fight you can stream on DAZN.

Usyk: Usyk, a 32-year-old southpaw, certainly brings good size to heavyweight at 6-foot-3 yet the real intrigue will be seeing how his sublime boxing skills mesh with the best in the division considering he’s not known as a huge puncher. The journey to find out that answer has been an arduous one.

Witherspoon: Although Witherspoon is 8-0 since 2012, the level of opposition he has faced has been dismal. Before that, he lost definitively (twice by knockout and once by disqualification) in the three times he has stepped up in class. Among those defeats was a 2012 TKO loss against Seth Mitchell who ultimately failed his attempt to convert from a college football background to become a serviceable heavyweight.

Usyk vs Witherspoon records

Though he’s already 32 years old, Usyk has only fought 16 times professionally. But he’s been perfect winning all 16 bouts and scoring knockouts in 12 of them.

Witherspoon is 38-3 with 29 KOs, and though he’s never had a win of consequence, he has triumphed in eight straight bouts and scored stoppages in seven of them. Witherspoon hasn’t lost a fight in seven years.

We’ve seen enough of Witherspoon to know that he shouldn’t be a problem for Usyk. I think he’s a great first heavyweight opponent for Usyk because Witherspoon has size, experience, and a decent enough punch that will give Usyk a taste of what heavyweight power is all about. But ultimately, Usyk should dominate this fight and could end up stopping Witherspoon. Call it Usyk with the TKO in the eighth round.
