Saturday afternoon on the college gridiron and a pair of teams from Conference U.S.A will square off as the Marshall Thundering Herd take on the Charlotte 49ers.These teams met last year and Marshall won that game at home by a score of 30-13. Marshall enters this contest at 7-3 on the year, including 5-1 in league play while the 49ers are at 5-5 overall and 3-3 within Conference U.S.A.
The Marshall Thundering Herd did not have a good start to the year as they went just 2-3 out the gate but “whoa Nellie”, have they been on a roll since. Marshall comes into this game off of a 31-10 home win over Louisiana Tech and it was their 5th win in a row. It also gave them a 4-1 mark at home for the year. Marshall is now 7-3 on the year overall and that includes a 5-1 mark within Conference U.S.A. This is a huge game for them as they are tied with FAU atop the Conference US.A. East standings. If the teams finished tied then Marshall will play in the title game, thanks to their win over FAU earlier in the year. The Herd will be in great shape if they win this game as they have a home game against FIU on to close out their season next.
The Charlotte 49ers did not have a good start to their year as they were just 2-5 through their first seven games. Since then, they have rattled off three wins in a row and are just one win away from reaching bowl eligibility. Should they grab a win in this game or their finale on the road against ODU, the 49ers would have gained bowl eligibility for the first time in their brief history at the FBS level. They enter this game off a 28-21 road win over UTEP and the offense has now allowed 41 total points in their last two games, after giving up 42.6 ppg over their previous five games. They did allow 174 yards on the ground in the win over UTEP and it is that run defense that could give them an issue here. The 49ers are 115th in the nation against the run and Marshall is 33rd in rushing.
