After the long winter break, a new season of the Formula One World Championship is finally upon us. As usual, the first race on the calendar is the Australian Grand Prix, which runs this weekend in the city of Melbourne.

The Melbourne stop is one of the most popular on the F1 calendar, and there’s always a giddy sense of excitement and anticipation as it’s the first race. It takes place on the Albert Park street circuit, a 16-turn layout that stretches 3.3 miles and features a combination of short straights and second and third gear chicanes, and requires medium to high downforce and good traction.

It looks like we’ll be in for fine weather for Sunday’s race. There could be some rain during Saturday’s qualifying, however. Tire supplier Pirelli has announced its soft, supersort and ultrasoft compounds for the weekend.

During F1’s previous season, the competition was very close between the top teams, especially in the first half. Ferrari put up a very tough fight initially but eventually Mercedes-AMG’s dominance returned. This season is expected to see a resurgent Red Bull Racing thanks to improvements to the Renault power unit the team relies on, so hopefully the competition is even closer than last season. We should add that McLaren is also running the Renault power unit this season, so hopefully the team can pick up some pace after the dismal Honda years. We’re all tired of seeing a sad Fernando Alonso after every race.

The cars haven’t changed much from the previous season. There’s no missing the new Halo cockpit protection system, though, and the rear aero has also been simplified.

The reigning champion is Lewis Hamilton, driving once again for Mercedes. He and Ferrari’s Sebasitan Vettel are both chasing a fifth title. Yes, this season will see two four-time world champions competing.

After Friday’s practice session, Hamilton topped the time sheets, albeit with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen close on his tail. Just 0.127 seconds separated their times. Fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas was third followed by Ferrari men Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel in fourth and fifth. There weren’t many dramas, though Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo had to cut his practice short due to debris on the track. And Williams’ Lance Stroll had to stop too after his car suffered technical issues.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning some of the new drivers on the grid: Sergey Sirotkin has replaced the retired Felipe Massa at Williams; Pierre Gasly has replaced Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso; Charles Leclerc has replaced Pascal Wehrlein at Sauber; Carlos Sainz has replaced Jolyon Palmer at Renault; and Brendon Hartley has filled Sainz’s empty seat at Toro Rosso.

Club de Golf Chapultepec is in the heart of Mexico, but based on last year’s results, it may be the most European of courses on the PGA TOUR.

Consider the leaderboard at the 2017 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship: Although American Dustin Johnson was the winner, the next four finishers were from Europe. Of the top 10 players, six were from Europe, and of the 27 players who finished T25 or better, there were more Europeans (13) than Americans (12).

That’s not a ratio we see very often on the PGA TOUR. The Open Championship, of course, may favor Europeans since it’s played in the United Kingdom and has more Europeans in the field. Obviously, World Golf Championships fields generally will have a higher ratio of Europeans than regular PGA TOUR events, since several of this week’s participants are regulars on the European Tour.

Still, perhaps the Europeans have found their comfort zone in the high-altitude course in Mexico City. Of the 65 players in the field, 17 are from Europe – including seven from England.

“It is a very European layout,” said Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, runner-up last year to Johnson. “Last year it just reminded us of playing in Italy or some of the courses that we play. And it wasn’t just me that played well last year, there were a lot of Europeans up there.

“It just is a bit of a European layout, a bit (more) of an old-school golf course (than) ones we’re kind of used to playing a little bit. It’s still different, it’s still a long way above sea level and the greens are a bit (more) slopey than what we’re used to. So there are still differences that we don’t get but just the general feel of when you’re walking down the fairways and seeing the tee shots, it’s tree-lined, that is quite a European feel to it.”

Ironically, one of Europe’s best players did not fare well in Mexico last year.

England’s Justin Rose failed to break 70 in his four rounds, eventually finishing T38 – even though he ranked first in strokes gained: tee to green. He may enter this week as Europe’s hottest player, having won three times in his last eight starts to move to No. 5 in the world. (Spain’s Jon Rahm, at No. 2, is the highest-ranked European in the world.)

Rose doesn’t subscribe to the theory that Chapultepec favors long hitters, despite Johnson’s success last year.

“It shouldn’t be a golf course that really suits the long hitter,” he said. “I think it’s the kind of golf course that suits everybody and offers everybody the opportunity to play well. It’s very strategic, there’s a lot of wedges in hand for most of the field. Yeah, it’s about kind of just getting the ball in the hole this week.

“Just from memory, you can be aggressive, you can try and take it over tree lines occasionally. But if you’re on your own, that works for a long hitter, but equally there’s a lot of risk with that as well. So game plan’s very important around here, but I think all types of players can find their way around the golf course.”

Tommy Fleetwood – The Englishman has been playing some great golf recently, including a fourth place last week in Palm Beach Gardens. He was second in this event last year, finishing just a shot back of DJ.

Alex Noren – The Swede has twice been a winner of the European Masters so clearly enjoys playing at altitude. He’s shown great form on the PGA Tour so far this year and was third last week in The Honda Classic.

Phil Mickelson – Tied seventh in this event last year, Mickelson obviously likes the course. He’s been enjoying one of the best runs of form he’s experienced in recent years with top-six finishes in his last three starts, including a tie for second in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Predictions

Trying to figure out who will take the checkered flag for the Daytona 500 is almost always a fool’s errand simply because there are so many factors that could play into the outcome, and the fastest car definitely doesn’t always win. Still, this feels like a Ford week and the Team Penske cars have looked great, so we’ll go with Brad Keselowski to shake off his poor starting spot and win his first Great American Race, giving him less reason to gripe about Ford’s perceived disadvantages versus Chevy and Toyota for the rest of the 2018 season — or at least for a few weeks.

As for a dark horse pick, keep an eye on Daniel Suarez. The Joe Gibbs Racing sophomore hasn’t been talked up nearly as much as his fellow young guns during the offseason, and he’s not even the new guy at JGR thanks to Erik Jones. But his style of sneakily being in the top 10 even though you didn’t notice him is reminiscent of Matt Kenseth, and since he was in the mix on Saturday night, it would not be shocking to see him lingering within striking distance late on Sunday afternoon.

Tournament History-

After being moved to accommodate the Olympics last year, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational returns to its traditional slot this time around – one week ahead of the year’s final major – the USPGA Championship.

Originally known as the World Series of Golf, the event was first played in 1976 and it became a World Golf Championship event in 1999. It’s a lucrative limited field tournament featuring the world’s best players with no cut.

This is always one of the best tournaments of the year, and is always staged at the tough Akron course in Ohio. It’s the longest par-70 on the regular tour (ie a non-major) at 7,400 yards and the key areas to consider are greens in regulation and par-4 scoring, while bearing in mind that players who can rip it off the tee are going to have a definite advantage.

Bridgestone-Invitational

Rory McIlroy won last year but is obviously missing this time around. He finished two clear of Sergio Garcia, having started the final day three behind. But Rory raced home in just 66 blows compared to Sergio’s 71. That 71 was ten more than his score on Friday, when he equalled the course record with an unbelievable display of golf.

There’s every chance Sergio will be right in the mix again this week but we have been to that well often enough this season and the fact is that his putting lets him down at the wrong time. Overall it’s not a bad stroke but under pressure it clearly falters.

Of course all eyes will be on Jordan Spieth, but he can’t win every week, and while he gets better all the time, he has not threatened here previously. Clearly, with his putting stroke, he could always be in contention, and his par-4 performance means he has the right profile here, but at 6/1 his odds are too short.

America’s cup Live Streaming- Beginning in late May, yacht lovers are in for a spectacular treat: the kick- o of the 35th America’s Cup presented by Louis Vuitton in Bermuda. Defending the America’s Cup, the competition for the oldest trophy in international sports (dating back to 1851), will be Oracle Team USA, representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, which won the Cup in 2010 and 2013. Five challengers will race one another over the course of a month to go up against the Oracle team.

The long wait is finally over.After all of the preparation, all of the practice racing, all of the talk and all of the anticipation from sports fans around the world, the 35th America’s Cup is now upon us.

THE battle for the 2017 America’s Cup heats up this weekend as a host of challengers begin fighting for the right to take on reigning champions Team Oracle USA.

Team Oracle USA is the defending champion after coming back to beat Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 in a thrilling final series at the same venue in 2013.

May 27-June 4: America’s Cup qualifiers

There are six teams battling for the right to be challengers to Team Oracle USA, which also takes part in this round (although they are already guaranteed to defend the trophy).

Every team races each other twice in one-on-one round-robin racing, scoring one point per win. The top four teams reach the challenger semi-finals.

June 5-9: America’s Cup challenger semi-finals

The top four split off for two best-of-nine series, with two races held a day. Defenders Team USA Oracle drop out at this stage of the competition.

June 11-13: America’s Cup challenger final

The top two challengers left slug it out in another best-of-nine series for a place in the big one.

June 18-19: America’s Cup match

Defenders Team Oracle USA will take on the top challenger for The Auld Mug in a best-of-13 (first to seven) series. Four races are held on the first two days, then there’s a crucial five-day break before the series resumes.

WHAT IS America’s Cup?

The America’s Cup dates back to 1851, is held every four years and attracts some of the world’s best sailors, yachts entrepreneurs and sponsors. Much like Formula One racing, it’s not only a test of skills but of teamwork, technology and management.

The events ultimately come down to a series of match races between two yachts — the defender vs the challenger.

American, Swiss and New Zealand teams have dominated the event since the turn of the millennium, while Australia scored a famous victory with Australia II in 1983 but has not presented a challenger in three decades.

Regarding television and the internet, America’s Cup organizers have arranged more than 40 hours of coverage beginning the first day of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers, which start May 26, via NBC Sports, NBCSN and the NBC Sports app.

In The World Sailing Show’s preview of the 35th America’s Cup, they take a close look at the teams and consider how they might fare over the next five weeks.

They will look at the road to the America’s Cup and explain what the successful Challenger needs to do to be selected to take on the Defenders, Oracle Team USA. How they got here-

Pittsburgh Penguins:-

The Penguins had a difficult road back to the finals, between their opponents and injuries. Murray aggravated an injury in warmups before Game 1 of the first round agains the Columbus Blue Jackets, forcing backup goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury into action. They beat the President’s Trophy-winning Washington Capitals in Game 7 on the road. Murray took over for Fleury in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Ottawa Senators with the Penguins down, 2-1, in the series. They won Games 4 and 5 to take a 3-2 lead, but the Senators forced Game 7, where the Penguins won in double overtime.

Nashville Predators:-

The Predators went from earning the final playoff spot in the Western Conference to making a dominant run to the Stanley Cup Finals. After clinching the second wild card spot, the Predators swept the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, allowing just three goals in the series. After beating the St. Louis in six games, the Predators dispatched the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference finals, again in six games. They won the clinching Game 6 in Nashville, 6-3, after getting a hat trick from Colton Sissons and two late empty-net goals.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD-

These two teams split their two games against each other this season, with each one winning convincingly. The Predators beat the Penguins 5-1 on Oct. 22 and the Penguins evened things up with a 4-2 victory on Jan. 31.

Why you have to watch: –

These two teams are trying to make history. If the Penguins win the Stanley Cup, they will become the first repeat champions of the salary-cap era. If the Predators prevail, they would win the first championship in franchise history and would be the NHL’s first No. 16 seed to pull it off. … It’s also a fascinating matchup. The Predators have the best defense in the league, led by P.K. Subban and Roman Josi. Pittsburgh’s defense has been crushed by injury and is missing its best player, Kris Letang. The Penguins forwards, meanwhile, are led by two franchise centers in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin — while Nashville is without its best center, Ryan Johansen, who will miss the remainder of the postseason because of a thigh injury. A debate will play out live — which would you rather have, great centers or great defensemen? … For the first time, two American coaches will be squaring off for a Stanley Cup. Nashville’s Peter Laviolette will try to stake his claim as the best American coach to ever run a bench. Pittsburgh’s Mike Sullivan has expertly guided a banged-up team through three rounds, establishing him as one of the three or four best coaches in hockey right now.

The Penguins and the Senators have met in the playoffs on several occasions. This will be the 5th time that the two teams will match up in the 11 years that the Penguins have gotten back into the playoffs since 2007.

The Penguins, who won the Stanley Cup last year, have kept their hopes of repeating alive by slaying two of the best teams in the NHL in the first two rounds. But they enter the Eastern Conference finals beat up and held together more by sheer will and determination than anything else. … The Senators clearly have something special going this spring, thanks to their fiery coach, inspirational goalie and a trap that has successfully frustrated nearly every team they’ve played. … The series features the best player on Earth (Sidney Crosby) and the best defenseman on Earth (Erik Karlsson). That alone makes it must-watch. … Karlsson has been terrific this postseason, and conference finals stage should give the Swede even more of an opportunity to shine. He has 13 points in 12 playoff games, while playing nearly 29 minutes per game. No other defenseman has reached double digits in playoff points.

In many ways, the Ottawa Senators are the antithesis of how a Stanley Cup contender should be built. They haven’t bottomed out for a shot at a top draft pick. They have no regular players on rookie contracts, but they do have a 32-year-old defenceman signed through 2021. They traded a touted prospect for aging depth help and a good young centre for an older one. They missed the playoffs in two of the past three seasons.

The Senators won two of three against the Penguins this year, though the Penguins had a healthy shot margin in those games (111-97) and the Senators scored only one more goal than the Penguins in their season series (11-10) … They played a wild game in December in which the Penguins spotted the Senators a 4-2 lead and then scored six goals in the next 32 minutes for the comeback win. … The Penguins had a hard time containing Karlsson during the regular season. He registered seven points in three games against Pittsburgh, though he was a minus-1. … Ottawa’s power play gave the Penguins trouble during the regular season, going 6-for-12 against them.

Prediction:

The Penguins are looking to make it back to their second straight Stanley Cup Final, while the Senators are looking to make it back to the final for the first time since 2007.

Erik Karlsson is the x-factor in this series. Karlsson is playing with a hairline fracture in his foot, but continues to show why he is considered to be one of the best defenseman in the NHL. Slowing down the Ottawa captain will be a necessity for the Pens.

After watching the Penguins play in Game 7 against Washington, they look poised to make another run for the cup. Penguins in six.
