We have some NL Central division action on Thursday’s MLB schedule as the Cincinnati Reds visit the Pittsburgh Pirates for game one of their four game weekend set.
The Cincinnati Reds come into this one extremely well rested after having game two of their mini two game set with the Cubs postponed due to inclement weather. The Reds will be looking to build off of their first win of the year, coming in the form of a 1-0 win over the Cubs on Monday. In that win, Tucker Barnhart went 3 for 4 with a double, while Eugenio Suarez added a triple and Scooter Gennett added a base knock of his own as the Reds mustered up just five hits as a team in the win. Tyler Mahle got the win after throwing six innings of one hit shutout baseball, striking out seven en route to the win, while Raisel Iglesias notched his first save of the season. Homer Bailey will start game one and is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 3 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bailey is 10-6 with a 3.39 ERA and 118 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to bounce back from their first loss of the year, splitting their series with the Twins after a 7-3 loss on Wednesday. Josh Bell went 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs while Colin Moran added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the Buccos in the loss. Josh Harrison went 2 for 5 with a double, while Corey Dickerson, Starling Marte and Sean Rodriguez each added base hits of their own in the losing effort. Ivan Nova took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits while striking out three over 5.1 innings of work to fall to 0-1 this season. Steven Brault will start the opener and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 3 strikeouts this season. In his career, Brault is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 2 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 6-13 in Bailey’s last 19 division starts and 3-13 in their last 16 games overall while the over is 9-4 in their last 13 games against a left-handed starter. Pittsburgh is 5-0 in Brault’s last 5 starts and 5-0 in their last 5 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Cincinnati is 7-3 in Bailey’s last 10 road starts against Pittsburgh.
There’s no doubt that Pittsburgh has gotten off to the better start of these two teams, but one has to wonder if the hot start is starting to cool after Wednesday’s loss. Cincinnati comes into this one extremely rested, and while the Pirates didn’t have to travel, and have had success with Brault on the bump, Cincinnati has had their own share of success with Bailey on the mound at PNC Park, so I’ll take a stab at the Reds with the plus money here.
